It offers visitors timeless presendation of the cultural history of Chania from the Neolithic Period up to the Roman Period. The museum has been housed since 1963 in the historic centre of Chania, in the church of the Monastery of St. Francis , a major monument of the Venetian period in Crete (1211-1669). The permaned exhibition illustrates, through archaeological testimonies, the cultural history and character of the area through the ages, from the Neolithic period to the Roman era (4th millenium BC-3rd C.AD). The museum collection contain finds from the Neolithic sites (mainly caves), settlements and cemeteries og the Minoan and historic periods found in Chania Prefecture. These include important Minoan finds fro the excavations on Kasteli Hill in the city of Chania, which most scolars identify with teh Minoan and Classical city of Cydonia, the major center of power of West Crete in antiquity.
